This works if you want your page numbers to start anywhere after page 1. In my example I want to start numbering on page 3, but this would work even if you wanted page numbering to start on page 57 (for example).

If you want page numbering to begin after the title page: Place the cursor at the bottom of the cover page, and from the Insert menu, select Break, and then Section Break (Next Page). Place your cursor on the first page of your document (not the cover page). From the Insert menu, choose Page Numbers. In the header or footer area, select the page number. Use the Tab key to position the page number left, center, or right. If the number is flush left, press Tab once for center, and twice for right. To go back, press Backspace until in position. Head to the first page you want your numbers to appear on (probably the first page of the first chapter) and double-click on the footer. While in the Footer, the ribbon should swap to the Header/Footer menu and you’ll see the ‘Insert Page Numbers’ button. Go ahead and click that.

We do this by breaking the document into sections. In this example I am using the following structure:

Page 1 - title page

Page 2 - contents page M4ufree free online the hunt [2020] movie site.

Page 3 - real document starts <= I want this to be labelled page 1

Step 1: Insert a section break at the end of the title page, and the end of the contents page.

Put your cursor at the END of your title page, then click Insert => Break => Section Break (next page)

Do the same thing for the contents page. Now your document has 3 sections and when we insert page numbering it will only number that section.

Step 2: Insert the Page Numbers

Navigate to the first page you want numbered (page 3 in my example).

Click Insert => Page Numbers

Ensure ‘show number on first page’ is checked

Click Format…

Under ‘page numbering’, select Start At and enter “1”

That’s it!

You can now update your contents page and it will refer to your shiny new page number format.

This took me a long time to work out. I’m writing this primarily for my awesome wife who writes way more essays than I do. :-)

More Help

Although I don't think it covers this exact scenario, these Microsoft Word reference guides on Amazon are cheap (~$3) and have really helped me learn where all the useful features are without having to google everything.

If you want something more in-depth, Office 2011 for Mac: The Missing Manual seems to be the best office for mac book around, and covers formatting in a lot more detail than the Office for Dummies books.

Changing the Format of the Page Numbers

Some organizations require the page numbers to be displayed in a certain format. For example, instead of the usual format (1, 2, 3…), you might need to use roman numerals (I, II, III…) or even letters (a, b, c…). Here’s how to change the format of the page numbers in your Microsoft Word document:

  1. Open your Microsoft Word document, if it is not already open.

  2. From the Insert menu, select Page Numbers. The Page Numbers window appears.

  3. Click Format. The Page Number Format window appears, as shown below.

  4. From the Number Format menu, select a page number formatting option.

  5. Click OK.

  6. Now you’re back in the Page Numbers window. Click OK to save and apply your changes.

Now the page numbers in your Microsoft Word document are formatted the way you want them to be!
